DFB snubs Gianni Infantino’s FIFA president candidacy

July 28, 2026

Every World Cup has its fair share of controversy, but the most recent edition of the tournament was marred with all kinds of wild rumors, questionable decisions, and controversy. One of the biggest instances would probably be USMNT’s Folarin Balogun’s red card. After being overturned by FIFA, following a call from the White House, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf has distanced himself from FIFA’s president Gianni Infantino. But it doesn’t end there.

According to reports from Bild, the German Football Association has officially declined to sign a letter of support for Infantino’s candidacy as he seeks another term as FIFA President. Infantino, in recent years specifically, has come under fire from various organizations, both in sport and in politics, for his questionable behaviour as FIFA president. It seems as though the DFB is finally sending a message in response to everything they have, until now, been silently protesting.

However, despite the snub from Germany, Infantino’s path to re-election ahead of the March 2027 FIFA Congress remains structurally concrete. Key continental federations, including CAF (Africa), AFC (Asia), and CONMEBOL (South America), have already firmly lined up behind the FIFA chief, with bodies like the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) submitting official letters of endorsement.

Neuendorf’s decision to withhold support sends a strong message about competitive integrity and opposition to political interference following the Balogun affair. However, FIFA’s voting structure relies on a broad global coalition where each national association carries equal weight. With continental federations already pledging their support, Germany’s vocal pushback seems to be more a symbolic protest than a genuine threat to Infantino’s position.

Do you think European federations should unite behind an alternative candidate to challenge Infantino, or is his global support base simply too strong to overcome? Let us know in the comments!
