Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Manchester United on this day as Arsenal were beaten 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium back in 2009.
On May 5 ,2009, Cristiano Ronaldo rocked the Emirates Stadium by shining for Manchester United against Arsenal. The Red Devils met their Premier League rivals in the semi-finals of the Champions League leading 1-0 from the first leg. And their No 7 was unstoppable in the second fixture in north London, netting twice in a stirring 3-1 win.
Manchester United had beaten Arsenal 1-0 at Old Trafford, with Ronaldo hitting the crossbar that evening following an early goal from John O’Shea.
And the Gunners were hopeful of beating Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and making the Champions League final due to the home advantage in the second leg.
However, any hopes of Arsenal progressing to the showpiece occasion in Rome were over almost immediately.
Ji-Sung Park put United ahead after eight minutes, silencing the majority of the Emirates Stadium in the process.
After that, however, it then became the Ronaldo show.
In the 11th minute, United had a free-kick from 40 yards out. Only one man was ever going to take it, despite the likes of Wayne Rooney and Anderson also being on the pitch.
