Chelsea Twitter account savages Leeds with ruthless revenge tweet after relegation

May 29, 2023

Leeds were relegated back to the Championship after a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham on the final day of the season – and Chelsea couldn’t resist the chance to mock their old rivals’ plight

Chelsea’s social media team wasted little time in sticking the boot in on old rivals Leeds with a ruthless revenge tweet following their relegation from the Premier League.

Leeds’ 4-1 defeat to Tottenham on the final day of the season saw them head back to the Championship with a whimper after a disappointing season for the Yorkshire club. Even Sam Allardyce’s presence in the Leeds dugout for their last four games was not enough to help them beat the drop after predecessors Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia had also struggled in the hotseat.

It was a sorry end to a season which initially looked to be promising so much. Leeds went the first three matches of the campaign unbeaten, earning an opening day win over Wolves, drawing at Southampton, before thrashing Chelsea 3-0 at Elland Road back in August.

While Leeds were toasting their win over Thomas Tuchel’s side, their Twitter account pounced on the opportunity to poke fun at their adversaries, highlighting a string of tweets from during the game which revelled in Chelsea’s misfortune.

“Starting to assert ourselves!” read the first from Chelsea’s official Twitter account, followed swiftly by back-to-back goal updates announcing Brendan Aaronson’s opener and Rodrigo’s header to double Leeds’ advantage. “Life comes at you fast!” Leeds’ Twitter account wrote.

Sadly for Leeds, that tweet has come back to haunt them in the aftermath of losing their Premier League status.

While Chelsea have had a campaign to forget – finishing 12th in the table and only 10 points above the drop zone themselves – their social media team couldn’t help but take a swipe at Leeds, sharing their rivals’ tweet from back in August, replying: “It certainly does”.

The rivalry between the two clubs extends back to the ’60s when the two sides shared several fierce encounters in the old Division Two, typified by some brutal challenges, which sparked a long-running feud that has stood the test of time.

As Leeds were sent back to the second tier, boss Sam Allardyce admitted the club had “a lot of work to be done” to prepare the team for another crack at the Championship. Meanwhile, Chelsea are expected to appoint Mauricio Pochettino to kickstart a new era, though interim boss Frank Lampard shared a similar view to Allardyce and took a swipe at the current Blues players as he claimed the standards at the club had declined dramatically.

“The standards collectively have dropped,” he said. “I can be honest about that now that it’s my last game, I might not see some of them that much any more.”
