Chelsea remind Tottenham of Timo Werner message Ange Postecoglou will hate

January 7, 2024

All the latest Tottenham news as Timo Werner’s history with Spurs is revisited thanks to hundreds of retweets by Chelsea fans

Timo Werner is close to becoming Tottenham Hotspur’s first signing of the January transfer window after agreeing to join Ange Postecoglou’s side on a short-term deal.

The striker is in talks with Spurs over a return to the Premier League, RB Leipzig confirmed, after reports on Saturday morning linked the Germany international to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Werner returned to Leipzig in 2022 after two difficult seasons at Chelsea. The 27-year-old managed 10 goals in 56 Premier League appearances for the Blues, winning the Champions League in 2021.

Since returning to the Bundesliga, Werner has struggled to replicate the form from his first spell – 78 league goals in four years – scoring only 11 in the past 35 league games. Poor form and then an injury has forced him out of action since November.

Werner will add some much-needed depth in Spurs’ attack following the summer departure of Harry Kane and short-term absence of Son Heung-min to the Asian Cup.

Despite the deal yet to be completed, many in the football world have placed doubts over the move. Werner’s first spell in England was rather underwhelming but this time could be different.

Spurs fans will need no reminding of Werner’s quality against them. So far in his career, the striker has scored two goals and assisted another three in eight appearances against the north Londoners.

Werner bagged in the Champions League last-16 first-leg win over Tottenham during his first spell with Leipzig before assisting two in the Premier League and scoring in the EFL Cup in 2020.

And a tweet on the official RB Leipzig account mocking Spurs following Werner’s move to Chelsea has resurfaced online thanks to hundreds of retweets. A video of Werner pointing to his ear after scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was posted alongside the caption: “We’re sure Timo will fit in well at the Bridge, he already knows how to score against Spurs.”
