Carragher slams Arsenal star in West Ham draw as he gives new title prediction

April 17, 2023

Jamie Carragher thinks Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale should’ve saved Jarrod Bowen’s equalising goal as the Gunners drew 2-2 against West Ham.

Mikel Arteta’s side took a very early two-goal lead with Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard scoring a goal each inside the opening ten minutes at the London Stadium.

But Premier League leaders Arsenal managed to throw away two points with Said Benrahman converting a penalty before Bowen’s equaliser on 54 minutes.

Ramsdale produced a wonderful performance to save the Gunners a point in their 2-2 draw on the road at Anfield last weekend but Carragher was critical of his role in Bowen’s goal for West Ham.

“Gabriel (Magalhaes) just does not know Bowen is there,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“The ball was more in hope but Gabriel just leaves it. The goalkeeper (Ramsdale) who was fantastic last week, he has got to save that.”

The draw at West Ham means second-placed Manchester City are now four points behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand.

And Carragher reckons Arsenal will now have to go and beat Man City at the Etihad Stadium on April 26 to stand a chance of winning the title.

Carragher added: “You just feel Arsenal are going to have to go to Manchester City and win now if they want to win the title.

Former Man Utd defender Gary Neville sparked a debate with Roy Keane and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink after the match by claiming that it would be an “unbelievable season” for Arsenal if they finished second.

“This title race always started at Anfield,” Neville said. “Look at the fixtures.

“But they would have snapped your hand off to be in this position at the start of the season. Arsenal finishing second would still be an unbelievable season.”

Keane strongly disagreed with Neville, he said: “No chance. They’ve been top of the table all season. It would be a terrible season.

“They’re out of every cup competition. 2-0 up this week, 2-0 up today. It’s a huge disappointment.”

And Hasselbaink was firmly on Keane’s side, he continued: “I think when you are Man City and under pressure they perform, they get the job done.

“They can go the season keep on winning. Arsenal still have to go to Newcastle too.

“You are not allowed to lose points today. This will hurt more than losing to Man City. The beginning of the season doesn’t matter. To lose is now would be a disaster.”
