CARLOS CORBERAN SENT WARNING ABOUT REPLACING JESSE MARSCH AT LEEDS UNITED

February 6, 2023

Carlos Corberan has been sent a warning about swapping West Brom for Leeds United, former Premier League midfielder Darren Ambrose telling talkSPORT (5 February, 5.30pm) than Nathan Jones’ Southampton struggles should be a cautionary tale.

He’d never admit it of course, at least not publicly. But you do wonder what decision Jones would make if The Doctor was to land his Tardis in the St Mary’s centre circle and take the former Luton Town boss back to early November.

Because, while the Hatters continue to thrive in the Championship, Southampton are starting to resemble a desperate spider trying and failing to escape the looming plughole. Saturday’s demoralising 3-0 defeat at Brentford was their sixth in seven top-flight games. That EFL Cup upset against Man City aside, the Saints look no better now than they did during the end of the Ralph Hasenhuttl era.

Some would say they’ve actually got worse.

So, while there is no guarantee that things would go equally badly for Corberan at Elland Road, Ambrose is keen to point out that, sometimes, a Premier League chance is not all it’s cracked up to be.

LEEDS UNITED EYE CARLOS CORBERAN AS POTENTIAL JESSE MARSCH REPLACEMENT
“Do you not think he (Corberan) may learn from what has happened to Nathan Jones?,” asks the former Crystal Palace and Newcastle United ace.

“Leeds is a huge club, a huge opportunity. But he’s doing such a good job at West Brom. Do you not think he will want to continue, and not go to Leeds? That’s what I think.

“I think Nathan Jones has set an example to other managers doing well in the Championship, to say; ‘You know what, I think I’m going to stick around for a little while’.”

Corberan, a former Leeds U23 coach and a member of Marcelo Bielsa’s backroom staff, is one of the leading candidates to replace the increasingly under-fire Jesse Marsch in West Yorkshire (Daily Mail). Leeds, despite dominating for large spells and creating the majority of the chances (not for the first time recently either), found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline at the City Ground.

For all of Leeds’ endeavour, the quality of Keylor Navas and Brennan Johnson was enough to put a six point gap between themselves and an in-form Forest side.

Corberan, meanwhile, has 11 wins in 16 games since replacing Steve Bruce at West Brom; turning a potential relegation candidate into play-off favourites. The Baggies will be desperate to retain arguably the EFL’s finest tactician. The Mail believe that a new contract could already be in the offing.
