Can a Dubai reset spark Arsenal’s title revival?

February 4, 2025

The Gunners are set to visit the UAE following their match against Newcastle

A 7,051km journey from the Emirates Stadium could prove pivotal in Arsenal’s quest to end a two-decade wait for the Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta’s side is leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of table-toppers Liverpool, with Arne Slot’s team sitting six points clear and holding a game in hand.

Arsenal, however, seem poised to revisit a proven strategy that worked wonders last season, aiming to refresh and recharge for a gruelling finale to the campaign, where they are chasing glory on three fronts: the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup.

Reports suggest the Gunners will head to Dubai for a week-long warm-weather training camp following their Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United in the third round, Arsenal’s schedule leaves them without another match until February 15, when they visit Leicester City.

Last year, a similar trip to Dubai’s NAS Sports Complex became the turning point in Arsenal’s season. After a stuttering run of just three wins and 10 goals in seven matches leading up to the trip, the Gunners returned rejuvenated.

What followed was an 11-match unbeaten streak – 10 of those were wins. They lost just one of their final 18 Premier League games, falling short of the title to Manchester City only on the last day of the season.

Arteta’s approach during that trip was as much about team morale as tactical tweaks. He incorporated elements of relaxation, inviting players’ families along to enjoy meals, golf outings, and even a trip to the zoo.

The manager described the experience as a moment when “everything clicked” for the team, a sentiment reflected in their free-scoring form upon returning to domestic action.

The question now is whether this year’s break will deliver the same results.

While Arsenal aren’t facing the same level of crisis as last year – when back-to-back Premier League losses prompted their Dubai retreat – they are still chasing Liverpool, who remain six points ahead despite playing one fewer game.

A reset in the sun could give the Gunners a much-needed edge, especially as Liverpool are set to navigate four matches in 10 days while Arsenal will play just twice in the same period.

However, Slot’s Liverpool have been relentless, losing only twice across all competitions this season. Arsenal will need more than just a refreshed squad; they’ll have to rely on Liverpool slipping up to keep their title hopes alive.
