Bournemouth boss spots revealing Jurgen Klopp move before ‘amazing’ Liverpool moment
Andoni Iraola reacts after his Bournemouth side are beaten 2-1 by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola believes his side were given a strong compliment by Jurgen Klopp in their defeat to Liverpool.
Goals from Cody Gakpo and substitute Darwin Nunez earned the Reds a 2-1 triumph in their League Cup fourth-round tie at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The home side had responded strongly to being behind at the interval and used the windy conditions to their advantage with Justin Kluivert equalising midway through the second half.
And that the Reds introduced Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alexis Mac Allister, Diogo Jota and Ryan Gravenberch from the bench was noted by Iraola.
“We performed really good and had a lot of chances,” said the Bournemouth boss. “We were improving during the game. But in this competition the most important thing is to be in the next round.
“There were some big teams out (already) and it was a big chance to get through, but we knew it was always going to be difficult when the draw was made.
“Liverpool finished the game with most of their starting XI and they had to work really hard to beat us.”
Iraola added: “We were really close. The second half the game was going in our way. We had the advantage of the wind, we were struggling in the first half with the wind and we couldn’t kick it long. It looked like we could have scored a second one to win.
“But at the end they made the difference with Darwin’s goal, it was an amazing strike. Probably when they were in their worst moment of the game it gave them the winning moment.
“The first goal we conceded from the edge of the area. The first clearance, with the wind and the rain it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t the same quality as if the conditions are good. But the conditions affected both teams in both areas.”
