Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić: BVB are aware of Gio Reyna’s quality

September 15, 2023

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić has provided updates regarding the squad in the pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against SC Freiburg, which included comments regarding Gio Reyna.

As the Bundesliga clash between Borussia Dortmund and SC Freiburg draws ever closer, head coach Edin Terzić sat down for the pre-match press conference and provided updates regarding the squad, but also commented on the developments surrounding certain players. One of those players was US international Giovanni Reyna.

Reyna has yet to be involved for Dortmund this season due to an injury picked up while on international duty with the USMNT early this summer. The player does seem ready to make his comeback however, as he has been in team training throughout the international break, while also playing for 60 minutes in a friendly for Dortmund’s U-23 side. This will come as a welcome respite from the amount of negative injury news having come out of Dortmund in recent weeks.

According to Terzić, Dortmund are very much aware of the fact that they have a quality player in Reyna:

“…he is very effective, especially in the last season as a substitute. He knows what I expect from him. Now, the goal is to consistently bring his potential onto the field.”

Terzić also highlighted that the player has not had it easy over the last several months, with the player involved in a spat with re-instated UMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter in the post World Cup fall-out, coupled with having to muscle through continued injury woes. The Dortmund coach is still counting on the player to play an important role for his side, which is good news all around. Reyna, when fully on his game, is a very creative and talented player that’s able to produce game-changing moments, which is likely what Terzić was alluding to when he noted Gio’s effective nature as a substitute.

Coming off the bench however can’t be the long term goal for Reyna, who will hope to push the starting 11 for a regular place of his own. Reyna’s re-introduction for Dortmund could prove to be an important catalyst in re-aligning their season and putting them on the right track. Dortmund have missed the type of play he can bring to the fore, so hopefully the US international can utilize his creative edge to good effect as the season continues.
