Bordeaux make contract announcement amid Rangers links to Josh Maja

June 20, 2023

Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux might be waiting on an appeal before they can rule on the contract of Rangers-linked Josh Maja, but is hasn’t stopped them announcing a new deal for their manager.

The French club have announced a one-year contract extension for the entire coaching staff at the former Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, with another year being triggered automatically if they achieve promotion.

Led by French coach David Guion, Bordeaux made the announcement on their official website with the simple message “the mission continues” after the club narrowly missed out on promotion to Ligue 1 this season.

Not that Bordeaux are giving up on their immediate French top flight hopes just yet, with Rangers-linked Josh Maja currently in contract limbo until the situation is resolved.

Bordeaux in Ligue 2 appeal with Josh Maja repercussions
Bordeaux missed out on promotion to Metz on the final day of the season after their match with Rodez was abandoned due to a fan invading the pitch and assaulting a rival player.

This came after Lucas Buades had given Rodez the lead in the match, Bordeaux’s Ligue 2 rivals also needing a win to avoid relegation at the expense of Annecy.

After the game was abandoned due to the player suffering a concussion, the Ligue de Football Professionnel awarded Rodez the win, subsequently ending Bordeaux’s promotion hopes.

Also having been deducted a point from next season, and with the club forced to close their south stand for four matches (two suspended), Bordeaux are taking their fight to the French Olympic Committee and this is where Josh Maja comes in.

Rangers made to wait
In the unlikely event that Bordeaux are given the chance to play the game and win promotion, Josh Maja would have a one-year contract option triggered in Ligue 1.

This would mean that Rangers would have to pay Bordeaux to sign the striker, who is currently available on a free come the end his current deal.

Reports last week had claimed that Rangers’ interest in Josh Maja is legitimate but is being held up by this stipulation as the 24-year-old tries to plot his next move.

So whilst there will be continuity at Bordeaux next season with manager David Guion and his backroom staff, the uncertainty remains for Josh Maja and by proxy Rangers.
