Bayern Munich’s Thomas Tuchel on French Referee Clément Turpin: “i’d Give Him a 1/10.”

April 20, 2023

French referee Clément Turpin has drawn criticism over his officiating of the Champions League quarter-final return leg between Bayern Munich and Manchester City on Wednesday night. The Premier League side drew 1-1 at the Allianz Arena to book their place in the semi-finals, thanks to their 3-0 win in the first leg. The Pep Guardiola-led side will face current holders Real Madrid for a mouth-watering tie in the semi-finals.

Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, lamented Turpin’s performance. The former PSG coach was sent off by the French official after receiving two bookings.

Turpin, who refereed last season’s Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool, gave penalties to both Manchester City and Bayern Munich for controversial handball offences. According to Tuchel, the trio of French referees were biased in favour of the English side. “We were never in a position to turn the tie on its head with three men against us. That’s a fact“, raged Tuchel in his post-game press conference.

Tuchel, who already knows Turpin since his Ligue 1 days as PSG boss between 2018 and 2020, gave a seething assessment of the French official’s performance at the Allianz Arena. “I would give him a 1/10 rating. He was abysmal. It’s amazing at this level. He blew his whistle for anything and everything. Everything was against us.” BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand was also not impressed with Turpin last night. “I’ve not liked the ref today, not my cup of tea. He wants it to be more about him than the game”, said the Manchester United great.
