Bayern Munich’s Thomas Tuchel contemplates the staggering personnel uncertainty he had to deal with before the game

December 18, 2023

Bayern Munich has a rough time with injuries recently. Just over a week ago, the squad was nearly fully fit. Then Serge Gnabry got injured against Frankfurt after just returning from an enforced layoff, with Noussair Mazraoui and Kingsley Coman following suit in the Champions League against Manchester United. But the injury worries did not stop there, coach Thomas Tuchel revealed after Bayern’s game against Stuttgart- and captured by @iMiaSanMia.

“There were a lot of uncertainties before the game. Harry [Kane] was ill in the past days but recovered in time,” Tuchel explained. “[Upamecano] wasn’t in the final training yesterday, but had a test today and was able to play.”

And then, of course, came for the hammer blow for Tuchel. “Our two central midfielders [Kimmich and Goretzka] trained yesterday but today they felt unwell and couldn’t play. It was difficult to prepare in such circumstances.”

When players have just recently been injured or are on the edge of availability, it is a nightmarish task to create a plan to beat one of the best teams in the Bundesliga. Yet the German mastermind weathered the storm, played his cards right and came out of the game with a beautiful and comprehensive victory. “We solved it well,” Tuchel admitted, likely with more than bit of satisfaction.

Now fingers crossed the preparation for the next game against Wolfsburg will be less troublesome.
