Bayern Munich return to the top after gritty win over Hertha Berlin
Bayern Munich managed to see out the challenge of Hertha Berlin on Sunday to return to the top of the Bundesliga standings.
There was another twist in the title race on matchday 30, as Bayern Munich moved one point clear of Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga standings. The defending champions took full advantage of the Black and Yellows’ slip up against VfL Bochum as they beat Hertha Berlin 2-0 at home.
The 2-0 win helped Bayern Munich put an end to their dismal run of form. But the three points certainly didn’t come easy for them. Thomas Tuchel’s side were far from their best, and needed two sumptuous assists from Joshua Kimmich to see off the challenge of bottom club Hertha Berlin at home. Second half goals from Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman helped Bayern get the win on Sunday.
Winning the Bundesliga title is now out of Borussia Dortmund’s hands once again. Edin Terzic’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by VfL Bochum on Friday. And they will need Bayern to slip up at least once in their next four games if they want to win the Meisterschale for the first time in 11 years.
Bayern Munich, who now have a one point lead and a superior goal difference, will next be in Bundesliga action on Saturday as they make the trip to Werder Bremen. Borussia Dortmund will then welcome the in-form Wolfsburg to the Westfalenstadion on Sunday. Wolfsburg are battling for a spot in Europe and will no doubt offer a tough test to BVB.
