Bayern Munich: RB Leipzig may try to sign Alexander Nubel in summer

February 3, 2023

Bayern Munich made a significant change to the goalkeeping department of the first team in January. After Manuel Neuer was ruled out for the rest of the season, Bayern went ahead and completed a deal to bring Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach. The Swiss goalkeeper signed a contract with Die Roten until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Before moving for Sommer, Rekordmeister tried to recall Alexander Nubel from his loan spell at Monaco. The former Schalke goalkeeper wanted to stay in Ligue 1 for the rest of the season. Moreover, Monaco also wanted to stick with Nubel until the end of the campaign.

Nubel is expected to return to Bavaria in the summer for talks with Die Roten regarding his future. He currently has two years left on his contract. Bayern wants to extend his contract, but Nubel will only stay at the club if he is given adequate playing time. He will be open to leaving the club permanently if Die Roten cannot assure him of consistent game time.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper will have several suitors due to his impressive two-year spell at Monaco. According to SportBild, RB Leipzig will seriously consider signing Alexander Nubel in the summer if he wants to leave Bavaria. Considering the ligament injury of Peter Gulasci, Leipzig is open to signing a new goalkeeper in the summer.

Nubel will definitely consider a move to Leipzig if he gets the chance to be their number one from next season. He will get the chance to play in the Champions League for Leipzig. Moreover, stronger performances at Leipzig may also improve his chances with the German national team.

Bayern still considers Nubel as the long-term successor of Neuer. They have tried to extend his contract but convincing him to stay at the club if there are two senior goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order.

The best possible solution for Die Roten will be another loan spell for Nubel, or they complete a permanent departure to a non-Bundesliga club with a buyback clause. For a couple of years, Sommer and Neuer can compete for the number one position. Nubel can eventually take over if he continues to develop as he did in the last two years. The buyback option will help Die Roten to get him at a fixed price. RB Leipzig will not accept the clause, so a move to another top team in one of the top five leagues of Europe will suit Die Roten. The next couple of months will give more clarity on Nubel’s future in Bavaria.
