Bayern Munich ponder Thomas Tuchel U-turn after being snubbed by three managers
Thomas Tuchel’s exit from Bayern Munich was announced earlier this season but the German club have struggled to find a replacement as their re-enter talks with their current manager
Thomas Tuchel and his agent have been photographed at Bayern Munich’s headquarters amid suggestions he could yet remain at the club.
The German and the Bundesliga giants had agreed to part ways at the end of the season, with that announcement coming several months ago. Bayern have gone on to endure a rare trophyless season as their decade-long stranglehold of the top flight was ended by Bayer Leverkusen.
Tuchel has remained coy on his next move but he and his representative, Olaf Meinking, were seen at the club’s base having conversations with the board, as per Bild. That has fuelled talk that he could remain at the Allianz Arena with Bayern struggling to find a successor.
Originally they had been tipped to land Xabi Alonso, the Leverkusen manager, who also played for the club. However the Spaniard has opted to stay put and Bayern’s second choice, Julian Nagelsmann, has chosen to continue his role with the German national side ahead of the Euros.
Nagelsmann was the Bayern manager at the start of 2023 but was sacked, allowing Tuchel to come in and take over. Ralf Rangnick, whose stock remains high in his homeland, was also touted for the role but was another man to turn down the Bavarians.
Tuchel hasn’t secured himself employment elsewhere and recently oversaw a dramatic Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid. He confirmed that it was unlikely he’d remain with Bayern, claiming the club had driven the desire to go their separate ways. “It’s very, very, very unlikely that it’s at Bayern, I have to say,” he told TNT Sports.
“We have an agreement, there is at the moment no reason to doubt this agreement. We took this position, the initiative came from the club, and so it is and I’m fine with it.
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said in a statement when Tuchel’s departure was first announced: “In a good, open discussion, we came to the decision to end our working relationship by mutual agreement in the summer. Our goal is to pursue a new footballing direction with a new head coach for the 2024-25 season.”
chairman Herbert Hainer also added: “We have replaced three coaches in a not-so-long time frame. We want to work with a coach for the long haul. Hence, he will take our time thinking about it and analysing — and hopefully, hire the right one.”
Former Bayern boss Hansi Flick, who won the treble back in 2020, and Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi are two more men to be linked with the post.
