Bayern Munich keen to extend CanMNT superstar Alphonso Davies’ contract beyond 2025

September 14, 2023

Two days after Real Madrid’s interest in Canadian superstar Alphonso Davies had all the headlines, the big Bayern Munich news on Wednesday is that Bayern’s new management team wants to extend Davies’ contract.

Currently under contract until June 2025 — an extension that was signed in the early weeks of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic — Bayern are keen to keep the Canadian in Bavaria but need to convince Davies’ agent Nick Househ with solid plan for the player and the project at Bayern, according to German reporter Kerry Hau.

In the summer Househ admitted to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on a podcast that they were close to signing an extension, and then Bayern sacked the executive management staff and the deal disappeared.

While Bayern made their intent to keep Davies clear while the club went through a personnel transition, Househ seemed very content to wait to “see how things play out” rather than give any hints as to whether Davies has had his head turned by Real Madrid, or if he does in fact intend to stay at Bayern.

“Right now we haven’t made any final decisions on anything and he has two years remaining on his Bayern contract and is part of the Bayern team,” Househ told Romano in June. “So of course yeah there’s a lot of things in the media about transfers to this team and that team and possible summer moves but honestly right now we can’t confirm anything, and can’t deny anything.”

According to Hau, Bayern’s edge is that Marco Neppe, who was involved in the initial talks alongside Hasan Salihamidžić, has a good relationship with Househ.

Within minutes of winning an 11th straight Bundesliga title in the most dramatic of circumstances on the final day of the season, FC Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić left the club. Kahn had been CEO since the summer of 2020, shortly after Davies signed his first extension after a breakout start to what would end up being a Champions League winning season.

Having signed for Bayern in the summer of 2018 as a 17-year-old, Davies has already played over 150 games for Bayern, winning five Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League. He doesn’t even turn 23 until November.

Davies has made a strong start to the new Bundesliga season, with three assists already and what truly looks a burgeoning partnership with record signing Harry Kane. What a bromance!
