Bayern Munich could lose battle to Borussia Dortmund over Nürnberg sensation Can Uzun

January 9, 2024

Are Bayern letting a potential superstar slip through the cracks?

Reports have already broken that Bayern Munich are interested in Nürnberg’s 18-year-old striker Can Uzun, but it seems as though Borussia Dortmund is in the pole position to acquire the player.

According to both Florian Plettenberg and Sky Sports News, Nürnberg is holding out for a fee of at least 10 million Euros for Uzun in the summer (@iMiaSanMia). Dortmund is seen as the club most serious about the Turkish wonderkid as talks have reportedly already begun.

Uzun is having a breakout campaign in Bundesliga 2 with Nürnberg this season, having scored six goals and providing one assist in fifteen league appearances thus far (Transfermarkt). The player has also appeared for the Turkish U-21 national team but is yet to be called up to the senior squad and could declare for Germany if he so chooses, which could serve to address Germany’s striker problem once Niklas Füllkrug moves on.

Uzun looks to be a promising player, but Bayern already has Harry Kane and Mathys Tel coving the striker position for years to come. This begs questions about whether Bayern would actually have a use for Uzun regardless of the ability he might possess.

Dortmund might be the furthest along when it comes to potentially signing Uzun, but that doesn’t mean that the Bavarians are out of the race yet. If Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund deems it the right course of action Der Rekordmeister would likely provide Dortmund with strong competition for Uzun’s signature.
