Bayern Munich can get Max Eberl by paying adequate fee

June 4, 2023

Along with completing transfers in key positions this summer, Bayern Munich also needs to look for a sporting director. The Bavarian club parted ways with Hasan Salihamidzic at the end of the season after poor results on the pitch. Oliver Kahn also left Die Roten before the game against FC Koln, but the German club had a replacement lined up in the form of Jan-Christian Dressen.

Dressen was promoted internally since he has been working at the club in the chief financial officer role. Bayern will have to look outside the club for a new sporting director. They may need more time to get this position sorted since all top targets have contracts with other German clubs.

RB Leipzig’s Max Eberl has been reportedly considered as the top candidate for this role. Leipzig’s boss Oliver Mintzlaff has firmly insisted that Eberl will be staying at the club as part of the long-term contract agreed in December.

According to TZ, Mintzlaff will be open to parting ways with Max Eberl if Bayern comes up with the right offer. Moreover, Eberl is not completely settled in Leipzig, as his family is based in Munich. Die Roten has discussed Eberl’s name for the role internally, but a move for him is yet to be finalized.

A similar approach was adopted by the Leipzig boss when Die Roten came calling for Julian Nagelsmann in 2021. Leipzig ended up getting a record fee for Nagelsmann and his staff. Bayern will have to put together a significant package to extract Eberl from his contract at Leipzig.

This is not the first time Eberl has been linked with a move to Bayern. He was tipped to become the next sporting director at Die Roten in 2017 after doing incredible work at Monchengladbach for more than a decade. However, the Bavarian club eventually hired Hasan Salihamidzic.

Eberl continued to impress with his work at Borussia Monchengladbach. He eventually parted ways with Gladbach at the start of 2022 to take a break from football. The former Bayern defender took up the director of football role at RB Leipzig at the end of 2022.

The record Bundesliga champions are yet to make an approach to any club for the sporting director role. The immediate concern is sorting out the transfers in the summer window. The supervisory board will work along with Thomas Tuchel to attain the top transfer targets. A sporting director may eventually arrive in Munich during next season.
