Bayern Munich are taking a massive gamble on Vincent Kompany in two ways

May 26, 2024

Bayern Munich are set to shock the footballing world by hiring Vincent Kompany from Burnley as their next manager instead of a more established option like Hansi Flick.

The decision comes from new sporting director Max Eberl, who is sticking his neck out in the belief that the former Manchester City center back is the next big thing.

Kompany has intriguing traits, but he is coming at a huge cost despite not being a proven manager at the top level – let alone the level Bayern Munich aspire to be at as Champions League contenders.

According to a report from ESPN’s Rob Dawson, Bayern Munich and Burnley have agreed on a hefty compensation fee of 10 million pounds for Vincent Kompany to move to Bavaria.

That’s the kind of fee clubs usually pay for a proven top manager as opposed to someone like Kompany, but Bayern Munich will say it is worth it if Eberl is right about the coach being special.

And if he is wrong, Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport reports that Eberl’s own job will be at risk. So in this way, Bayern Munich are gambling twice with Kompany: both financially and with the future of their new sporting director.
