Barcelona’s transfer plan collapses after 26-year-old star refuses to be included in player-plus-cash deal for priority target

May 25, 2026

Barcelona appear ready to make a serious attempt to sign Julian Alvarez this summer, but one obstacle has complicated the operation.

Barcelona initially explored the possibility of reducing the financial cost of the deal by including Ferran Torres as part of the proposal to Atletico Madrid.

However, the Spanish forward has no intention of leaving the club and does not want to be involved in any exchange operation.

Barcelona are known to be strongly interested in Alvarez.

In fact, the Argentine striker is viewed as one of the most complete forwards, and recent uncertainty surrounding his future at Atletico Madrid has only increased Barcelona’s interest.

There is a growing feeling within Atletico Madrid that Alvarez may be considering a change despite only arriving recently.

Ferran Torres does not want to leave

Barcelona’s original idea involved offering a cash package together with Ferran in order to make negotiations more realistic financially.

However, the player’s refusal to leave means Barcelona would now need to attempt a full cash operation, something which is extremely difficult under the club’s current financial situation.

Ferran’s decision is understandable, as the Spaniard has become increasingly important within Hansi Flick’s plans, especially with Robert Lewandowski out of the picture.

Torres ended the season with growing influence in the attack and is believed to be fully committed to fighting for an even bigger role next year.

Furthermore, despite his contract expiring next summer, Barcelona are not rushing into renewal negotiations at this stage.

Importantly, the club feel comfortable with the current situation and is prioritising other urgent matters, like signing a forward, before opening formal talks over an extension.

So what now?
Even with the financial difficulty involved, Alvarez continues to be viewed as a transformative target for Barcelona.

The Argentine forward perfectly matches the modern attacking profile Flick wants to build around, but the sporting department knows signing him will not be easy.

Alvarez still has a long-term contract at Atletico Madrid and carries a massive €500 million release clause.

For a long time, Atletico considered him practically untouchable, but recent developments appear to have softened that stance slightly, especially if the player himself begins pushing towards a different future.
