Barcelona utility man could move to the MLS in the summer of 2024
Sergi Roberto is the most senior player at FC Barcelona currently and is the first captain of the team following the summer exits of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
The 31-year-old has spent his entire career at Barça having come through the academy ranks at the club, but his time in Catalonia may be drawing to an end.
Indeed, Roberto’s contract with the La Liga champions expires at the end of the season and an extension does not appear to be on the horizon at the moment.
As such, all signs point towards this being the Spanish utility man’s final season at Barcelona.
Roberto to MLS?
And, as per Mundo Deportivo, Sergi Roberto could follow his former teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba to the USA and sign for an MLS club when his Barcelona contract expires.
The 31-year-old remains committed to Barça and continues to demonstrate great professionalism despite his bit-part role this season.
And, it appears that he has come to terms with the possibility that this could be his final season with the Blaugrana.
As such, Roberto is already thinking about his next potential destination and sees the USA as the most favourable option.
Roberto has previously stated that he likes the USA, especially New York, and could be open to the switch next summer.
Very good references
The report goes on to state that Roberto has received positive references about the MLS from a host of his former teammates.
The likes of Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Lionel Messi, and Riqui Puig have all moved to the USA not long ago and have adapted well in the MLS.
Other former teammates such as Andreu Fontas, Uri Rosell, and Ilie Sanchez, who came through La Masia with Roberto have also endorsed the MLS.
There is still time for Roberto to study and assess his options, but the USA could be a strong possibility for him.
