Barcelona set to offer a new contract to academy product, player has other proposals
According to SPORT, Barcelona will make a new contract offer to academy graduate Arnau Tenas imminently but the goalkeeper’s continuity at the club is complicated as he also has proposals from other clubs.
The 22-year-old is a product of the La Masia youth setup and has been regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in Spain, which he showed during the recently concluded UEFA U-21 European Championships.
Tenas’ contract with Barça expired on June 30, after the club opted against triggering a two-year extension option as the salary increase for the youngster was deemed unfeasible within the club’s current economic parameters.
But, manager Xavi Hernandez wants the young shot-stopper to continue at the club and the La Liga champions are set to make a fresh contract offer to him, one with a lower salary that fits into the club’s current financial reality.
However, that will not guarantee his continuity at the club which is seen as ‘complicated’ at this point.
Tenas’ agent, Ivan de la Pena, has received interesting proposals from several teams, especially following his performances at the U21 Euros.
As a result, there is no certainty that the Spanish youngster will accept the offer from Barcelona and efforts will need to be made from both parties if a common ground is to be reached when they meet to discuss his future in the coming days.
Should he stay, though, Tenas would remain the third-choice goalkeeper at Barcelona behind Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Inaki Pena.
The 22-year-old has always displayed great commitment towards the Catalans but the offers from other clubs where he may have a faster pathway to first-team football could end up seducing him.
Currently on vacation after the U21 Euros, Tenas will only make a decision on his future once he returns. But as things stand, despite Barcelona’s insistence on retaining him, it appears complicated.
