Barcelona see €40 million-rated star as the in-house solution for the defensive midfield position

January 16, 2024

Barcelona’s midfield problems were exposed in the club’s recent humiliating 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

The club’s midfield was completely overrun by the opposition, in what led to yet another dismal performance from the Catalans.

Barcelona’s number six problem

This was not the first time Barcelona’s midfielder was left completely exposed. Ever since the departure of Sergio Busquets, the club have always lacked the services of a proper number six, who can orchestrate things in the middle.

Oriol Romeu was roped in from Girona but the veteran midfielder has endured a decline, thus failing the earn the trust of coach Xavi Hernandez.

This led to Barcelona entering the January market for a new signing. But it appears the club are not in a position to afford any new player this month.

oard’s internal solution: Andreas Christensen

With Barcelona unlikely to generate any revenue from the Libero deal anytime soon, the club’s internal board has decided to find an in-house option for the number six problem.

That is according to Mundo Deportivo, which suggests that Andreas Christensen has emerged as Barcelona’s ideal temporary solution in the defensive midfield position.

The club consider the Danish international, whose market value stands at €40 million, as an intelligent footballer, who can read the game very well. He also has good decision-making skills and has a lot of experience highest level of football.

Not to mention, Christensen is no stranger to playing the number six role, having previously done so with Chelsea and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Christensen’s presence in the number six role can allow de Jong and Pedri to be more expressive going forward, while adding more physicality in the second line of press.

Barcelona, therefore, have plans to test Christensen in the defensive midfield, especially once Inigo Martinez comes back from his injury.
