Barcelona seal Fabricio Diaz agreement

April 26, 2023

Fabricio Diaz will reportedly join Barcelona from Liverpool FC Montevideo in a deal worth €8 million in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Fabricio Diaz will embark on an adventure in Europe in the summer transfer window. Barcelona and Liverpool FC Montevideo have sealed an agreement worth €8 million for the 20-year-old midfield sensation.

Fabricio Diaz spent his formative years in his homeland, rising through the ranks at La Paz Wanderers before joining Liverpool FC Montevideo in 2016. Since then, he has come leaps and bounds, establishing himself as one of the best young midfielders in South America. And the Uruguayan sensation recently made his mark at the Under-20 South American Championships.

The 20-year-old will soon be in action during the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia. Meanwhile, he has made over 100 appearances for Liverpool FC Montevideo, chipping in with five goals and seven assists. Diaz’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona being a prospective suitor.

Barcelona will need a succession plan for Sergio Busquets, who has endured a drop in performance levels in the last few years. The Barcelona captain is in the twilight years of his storied career. And amid uncertainties surrounding his long-term future, the Catalan giants need a successor in place before his departure.

Several players have thus popped up on Barcelona’s radar, with Diaz emerging as a target last month. The 20-year-old midfield sensation forced his way into Barcelona’s plans after his heroics for Uruguay at the Under-20 South American Championships. And the Blaugrana recently contacted his entourage to try and hash out a deal.

The first contacts seemingly morphed into discussions over a summer deal. And according to the report, which cites Global Deportivo, Barcelona will sign Diaz in a deal worth €8 million. The young midfielder will initially represent Barcelona Atletic before rising to the first team in the coming years.

Such a move will also enable Barcelona to add Diaz to the matchday squads without registering him in La Liga. And amid the never-ending financial woes, assigning Diaz to the subsidiary team is a masterstroke. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if the 20-year-old South American midfield sensation can be Busquets’s heir.
