Barcelona propose inital extension offer to Xavi-favourite attacker
As the summer approaches, Barcelona have their task cut out as they not only look to sign new players but also secure the futures of their existing stars, especially after losing Sergio Busquets.
One of the players Barcelona are keen on keeping hold of is Ousmane Dembele. The Frenchman is one of the favourites of coach Xavi Hernandez, who had played a key role in his revival since the start of 2022.
Xavi has indeed honed Dembele’s qualities, turning him into a fine creative weapon for Barcelona in the final third. However, as the summer approaches, the forward’s future could be in doubt.
Even though Dembele has a contract until 2024, his deal includes a release clause worth only €50 million, which would enable suitors to sign him on a cut-price deal.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have made their first step in the bid to keep hold of Dembele. They have tabled a new proposal for Dembele over his contract extension. It is just the opening, though, and there will be new rounds of talk.
Romano adds that Barça coach Xavi considers him ‘untouchable’, much like some of the first-choice defenders in the current setup including Ronald Araujo.
It appears the Catalans are seemingly desperate to avoid having to sell Dembele for just €50 million this summer. Given the forward’s performances and his age profile, there should be no shortage of suitors either.
While the club will try everything they can to prolong the stay of Dembele, the futures of other Barcelona attackers remain uncertain. The likes of Raphinha and Ferran Torres have continued to be linked with a move away from Camp Nou, as part of the club’s plans to generate fresh income.
One would expect the future of these players could play an important role in determining the fate of Dembele next season.
