Barcelona presented three market opportunities to beef up midfield options
Barcelona’s quest for a new midfield general continues. Ever since the departure of club legend Sergio Busquets, a gaping hole has opened up in the defensive midfield spot, leaving the Barcelona midfield imbalanced.
Oriol Romeu, brought in last summer as a potential solution, hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. Reports suggest he might be on his way out of Camp Nou, with a return to Girona potentially on the cards.
Barcelona have three key market opportunities
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have at least three exciting market opportunities this summer, in their bid to beef up their options in defensive midfield.
Financial fair play regulations are creating a domino effect across Europe, with several clubs forced to sell players. This has created a potential opportunity for Barça to sign their top targets at a lower valuation.
The first opportunity comes in the form of two Premier League midfielders. Everton’s Amadou Onana and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes have both emerged as targets for Barcelona in the recent past.
Previously deemed untouchable due to high price tags, their clubs’ financial situations might force a sale, making them more attainable for Barcelona.
Onana, for his part, has recently hinted that he is ready to take the next step in his career and will be using the upcoming Euro 2024 as a stepping stone.
What about Joshua Kimmich?
Barcelona’s third market opportunity comes from the Bundesliga, where long-term target Joshua Kimmich is inching closer to an exit from Bayern Munich.
With Vincent Kompany taking the helm at Bayern Munich, a mass exodus is expected. Joshua Kimmich, previously linked to Barcelona, is reportedly on the transfer list.
While a proven star, Kimmich’s potential cost might come down due to his contract situation at Bayern Munich. This is coupled with the fact that the German is coming on the back of a poor spell under Thomas Tuchel.
Although Barcelona might still find it difficult to weigh up a move for Kimmich this summer, the equation may change if the Catalans manage to offload a few of their unwanted stars in the coming weeks.
