Barcelona, La Liga reach agreement over Gavi’s first-team registration, legal proceedings abandoned

February 15, 2024

According to a report from RAC1, Barcelona and La Liga have reached an agreement over the complete registration of young midfielder Gavi as the first-team player. The two parties, who have been in a legal dispute, have decided to close the matter.

Gavi, who is currently recovering from an ACL injury suffered during international duty with Spain, was expected to be registered in the first team in January last year, but Barcelona’s troubling finances forced them to delay the advancement.

The complete story

Since January last year, Barcelona and La Liga have been embroiled in a dispute over Gavi’s registration. Initially granted permission by the court to register him as a first-team member with the No. 6 shirt, this decision was later overturned a few months later.

In June, the National Court ruled in favour of Barcelona, reinstating Gavi as a first-team member for the upcoming season. Despite this, La Liga lodged another appeal against the decision.

Although a hearing was initially scheduled for July 20, it was subsequently postponed, leaving Gavi’s status at Barcelona unchanged.

The outcome of the next hearing, when Justice will make a final ruling, held significant implications.

If the decision had favoured Barcelona, Gavi’s situation would have remained unaffected. On the other hand, if La Liga had emerged triumphant, the midfielder would have reverted to a youth team contract.

Presently, following a year-long legal dispute, Barcelona and La Liga have reconciled their differences. Gavi, upon recovering from his injury, is poised to make a comeback as a fully reinstated member of the first-team roster, continuing with his No. 6 shirt.

The matter could have been resolved in January if the midfielder had been fit. However, registering him in the first team while injured would have made matters worse for Barcelona in terms of finances.
