Barcelona defender to undergo surgery in Bordeaux today

January 2, 2024

Marcos Alonso is one of many Barcelona players currently sidelined with an injury, with the club recently confirming that the player requires surgery to overcome his back problems.

While Barça confirmed the surgery, the club did not provide any further details regarding the surgery. They also did not provide a timeframe for the player’s return to the pitch.

Marcos Alonso to undergo surgery today
However, a recent report from Carlos Monfort has offered a crucial update on Marcos Alonso’s surgery.

The Spanish journalist suggests that the former Chelsea full-back had travelled to Bordeaux yesterday. He is set to undergo surgery in France on Tuesday.

The surgery will be done in order to solve the lumbar problem he has had to deal with for over a month now.

Similar treatment was required by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was also struggling with back problems since the start of November.

As a matter of fact, Alonso will be treated by Dr Amelie Leglise, the same doctor who operated on ter Stegen in December.

A big blow for Barcelona?
Marcos Alonso’s extended time out on the sidelines is sure to serve as a blow for coach Xavi Hernandez, who has limited options in the defensive unit.

However, the Barcelona coach does have Alejandro Balde and Joao Cancelo as two viable options for the position.

Balde, in particular, has started the last two matches after initially struggling with game-time in the early parts of the campaign.

Barcelona are also keeping tabs on the development of the young Albert Navarro, a talented 16-year-old left-back looking to make a mark in professional football.
