Antoine Griezmann mocks Alexis Sanchez after penalty miss vs Atletico Madrid
Antoine Griezmann mocked Alexis Sanchez after his penalty miss in Inter’s Champions League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening.
Inter took a slender 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie and appeared to be on course to reach the quarter final after
Federico Dimarco put them ahead in the 33rd minute.
Griezmann quickly equalised but Atletico needed a goal from Memphis Depay in the 87th minute to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate and force extra time.
The two sides could not be separated after 30 additional minutes and Jan Oblak was Atletico’s hero in the shootout as he saved penalties from both Sanchez and Davy Klaassen.
Griezmann was substituted in extra time due to injury, which meant he could not take a penalty, but Spanish TV station Movistar caught the France international celebrating Sanchez’s miss on the touchline.
During the clip, Griezmann was seen telling Atletico midfielder Rodrigo De Paul in Spanish, ‘es un cagón, el chileno es un cagón’, which means in English, ‘he’s a coward, the Chilean is a coward’. The word ‘cagón’ in Spanish is a derogatory term used for someone who is afraid or apprehensive.
Speaking about Griezmann’s desire to continue playing despite his injury, Diego Simeone said after Atletico’s shootout win: ‘Until he could, he was there.
‘When he couldn’t stand his legs he asked for a change. That’s what men do.’
Atletico now await their fate ahead of Friday’s Champions League quarter-final draw.
Simeone’s side are one of eight teams remaining in the Champions League alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
