Another Serie A club has entered the race to sign Celtic outcast Gustaf Lagerbielke

January 18, 2024

Gustaf Lagerbielke is a wanted man this January because he quite simply doesn’t have an immediate future at Celtic.

The Swedish centre-back signed on a long-term deal from IF Elfsborg in the summer but already is on the verge of making his way out of the club, seemingly on loan.

Lagerbielke has been frozen out of the Hoops first-team by boss Brendan Rodgers, with the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh all ahead in the pecking order.

He’s made just nine appearances for Celtic and it looks likely that the 23-year-old will see out the reason of the season in Serie A.

Genoa and Lecce were first to register their interest in signing Lagerbielke on loan, although a report claimed the latter could struggle to put together a deal financially.

Now, according to the Daily Record, the two aforementioned clubs have a new competitor in the race to sign Lagerbielke with less than two weeks until the close of the transfer window.

Indeed, Hellas Verona are the Italian outfit in question and are said to be considering a swoop for Celtic’s Gustaf Lagerbielke.

The report also states that the Hoops would be content with loaning out Lagerbielke in the short-term to free up wages in Brendan Rodgers’ bloated squad.

Just a couple of days ago, the same outlet reported that Lagerbielke wasn’t any closer in seeing his future resolved this month.

But the football transfer world is an ever-changing environment and with Verona now in the conversation, a three-way fight could ensue between them, Lecce and Verona for Lagerbielke’s services.
