Roma collapse against Real Madrid caps dire week for Italians in UCL
Gasperini’s side surrender 3-1 advantage to go down 4-3 at home
Adramatic collapse by AS Roma in Wednesday’s 4-3 home defeat to the Real Madrid of their former boss Jose Mourinho capped a dire week for Italy’s representatives in the Champions League, with all four losing.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men went into the closing stages of Wednesday’s showdown 3-1 up thanks to a goal by Marten de Roon goal and Donyell Malen’s double early in the second half.
But the Spanish giants, who had Kylian Mbappe to thank for cancelling out de Roon’s opener, took all the spoils with three goals in eight minutes by Carlos Espi, Endrick and former Roma defender Antonio Rudiger.
Earlier on Wednesday Como had lost 3-2 to Feyenoord while Napoli and Italian champions Inter had continued their dire start to Europe’s premier club competition on Tuesday, losing 3-1 away and 4-3 at home to Villarreal and Club Brugge respectively.
It is early days, but at the moment three of the four Italian teams are in the elimination places in the League.
Roma are 25th with one point from two games and Inter and Napoli 29th and 32nd respectively with zero points.
Como are 12th with three points.
