Newcastle United team news as Matthias Jaissle reveals ‘flexible’ Coventry City formation
Matthias Jaissle has urged Newcastle United fans not to read too much into his team’s formation.
While accepting that he adopts a 4-2-3-1 setup on paper, the German highlighted the Magpies’ in-game fluidity. Newcastle fans have seen the likes of Anthony Elanga move into central areas when in possession.
A rigid 4-4-2 also appears to be Jaissle’s preferred defensive shape, with Yoane Wissa operating in a free role as a No.10. Modern football can see several formations used in different patterns of the game.
Matthias Jaissle on Newcastle United system
Jaissle discussed the intricacies of his Newcastle system before travelling to Coventry City tonight. He told reporters: “Depending how you see the formation, often we start out of the 4-2-3-1, so you play with three midfielders.
“Again, if a No.6 tends to be slightly higher, like we had in the last match, then you have two No.8s, so don’t make it as fixed as you may think. It’s slightly different. If he’s five metres higher, then we’re talking about a No.8. If he’s five metres higher, then you’re talking about a No.10.
“If he’s five metres higher, then you’re talking about two strikers. So let’s keep it flexible and we want to bring the players in the best possible position, where they can shine, but also where they can help the team.”
‘We are happy’ – Matthias Jaissle
Jaissle also backed the versatility of his Toon squad – noting how several stars can occupy multiple roles. He added: “Many players can play multiple positions there as well, even some of them can play other positions than only the midfield positions.
“Of course, as a coach you prefer to always have the perfect balanced squad, but it’s never a dream scenario (that is) usually happening. We are happy with the squad in general and we try to bring everyone in the best position.
“Like I said, and hopefully giving many, many different players the game time. But they need to deserve it.”
