Newcastle United confirm key player suffered injury vs Millwall

It would be safe to say that Newcastle United were nowhere near their best against Millwall. If the supporters had been expecting an easy night and a comfortable win away at The Den, it was anything but that.

Ultimately, a win did come thanks to a late goal from Joe Willock as Millwall’s resolute defence was finally broken. The Championship side could not find an answer to that.

But coming out of the game, there are as many questions as answers for Newcastle United. One injury picked up on the night might end up having a long-term impact on Matthias Jaissle’s side.

One of the best performers in Jaissle’s new-look Newcastle United team has been Amar Dedic. The right-back has been phenomenal so far but looked off-colour against Millwall before being taken off at half-time.

Was it a tactical change due to his performance? Something that had already been planned to give Tino Livramento more playing time? Or an injury that forced Jaissle’s hand?

Well, unfortunately, it looks like it was the third. According to The Shields Gazette, Jaissle said regarding the Dedic substitution at half-time:

“Amar fell a little bit on his hamstring, so we didn’t want to take any risk, but it was also planned that Tino gets a bit more minutes than last time [against Bournemouth].”

It remains to be seen what the extent of the injury is. Just based on Jaissle’s initial comments, it looks like it might not be a serious issue.

But you never know. We need to wait for a more in-depth assessment after the game against Millwall to determine that rather than relying on post-match comments from the manager.

Newcastle already have able cover in Tino Livramento
Now, Newcastle United already have very able cover in the form of Tino Livramento. In fact, in the eyes of many, he would still be the starter despite Dedic’s good performances at the start of his Newcastle United career.

One thing worth noting though is that Livramento is returning from an injury of his own. Even until very recently, it was suggested that he was not ready to start games yet.

With Dedic out injured now, could we find Livramento starting when Newcastle United take to the pitch next, against Leeds United at Elland Road?

It is very possible. But then, would it come with a fair share of risk? One would imagine so. It is important to ensure that Livramento is not rushed and end up suffering a setback.
