£40m clause gone: Marcus Rashford could now have an unexpected Man United future

July 17, 2026

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford had a £40 million exit clause in his contract that has now expired, as revealed by journalist David Ornstein.

The England international is currently representing his country at the FIFA World Cup but is expected to report back for United’s pre-season preparations afterwards.

Rashford had been widely expected to leave this summer, with the £40 million clause offering interested clubs a straightforward route to complete a deal.

Now that the clause has expired, any transfer will require direct negotiations with United.

Rashford could return to Old Trafford

The 28-year-old was part of the bomb squad last summer under former head coach Ruben Amorim.

He subsequently joined Barcelona on a season-long loan and enjoyed an outstanding campaign, contributing 28 goals and assists while helping the Catalan giants win the La Liga title.

Despite his impressive performances, Barcelona ultimately decided against activating the £26 million purchase option included in the loan agreement.

They have added Anthony Gordon to their star-studded attack and could soon officially complete the deal for Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi.

Barcelona could still return with renewed interest later in the transfer window, but INEOS are reportedly unwilling to sanction another temporary departure.

United head coach Michael Carrick shares a good relationship with the forward after the pair played together under Louis van Gaal.

There is a strong possibility that the England international will be reintegrated into the United first team, but his staggering wages will create a huge financial problem for INEOS.
