Jamal Musiala says Vincent Kompany’s system allows him to get into the box more than Thomas Tuchel’s

December 31, 2024

And we knows what happens when gets into the box, right? The goal music starts playing soon after.

Bayern Munich player Jamal Musiala is having a resurgent season. After scoring 10 goals in the Bundesliga last season, he is just 1 goal off that tally less than halfway through the season. Among these goals is a surprising amount of headers, something the skilled dribbler Musiala was hardly know for before. How did this happen?

“It’s more about my positioning,” Musiala explains, via @iMiaSanMia. “It’s not like I’m practicing headers. It’s more about conversations and videos. After last season, I decided to get into the right positions to score the easy goals.”

But it cannot be as simple as making a decision to score more easy goals. Did it have something to with how Musiala had to pick up the ball from deeper positions under Thomas Tuchel last season? “I tried to get into the box for easy goals last season too, but maybe not as often,” Musiala concedes, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I saw that I can still do what I always do: dribble, create attacks, help build up – and when I don’t have to offer myself for a short pass, I can move more into the box. After the first discussions with [assistant coach René Marić] and [head coach Vincent Kompany], it was one of the first things they wanted to see from me this season.”
