Attractive football not seen for years? Why Bayern Munich always kept faith in Vincent Kompany
The first year head coach has navigated the club through choppy waters already and is starting to look like a revelation.
A bad streak. Every club has one of those — just ask Pep Guardiola — and Bayern Munich is no different. FIrst-year head coach Vincent Kompany endured a rough stretch earlier this fall that culminated in a blowout defeat to former Bayern coach Hansi Flick and FC Barcelona.
But the Bayern bosses — at least publicly — have never wavered in their support for Kompany.
“We are incredibly happy with our coach Vincent Kompany,” said Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer last month in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Starting with [executive board member for sport] Max Eberl, through the board, to Uli [Hoeneß] and Karl-Heinz [Rummenigge], because we are witnessing extremely attractive football. We haven’t seen that at Bayern for years.”
Years? That would be quite the shot fired at Kompany’s predecessor, Thomas Tuchel, and perhaps even Julian Nagelsmann, whom Bayern dismissed in March of 2022 — and who is now leading the German men’s national team renaissance.
