November 1, 2024

Valencia have paid tribute to former player Jose Castillejo after he became a casualty in the flash floods in the city.

Valencia have paid tribute after former player Jose Castillejo died in flash floods which have hit the city.

The official death toll in the eastern region has climbed above 150, with more expected as emergency services continue searching the area.

Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described Valencia as a “disaster zone” after the torrential rain left citizens trapped in homes and cars as the floods continued to rise.

Some of the worst-affected areas are preparing for further rain, with Valencia having yellow and amber weather warnings.

And Valencia CF have reacted to the sad news that Castillejo, a former youth footballer, has lost his life in the disaster.

The club posted an official statement on X, which read: “Valencia CF mourn the passing of Jose Castillejo, casualty of the flash floodings. Jose Castillejo came up through the [club’s] youth system up to U18 level and played for others teams in the region.”

Castillejo came through the ranks at Los Che before going on to represent Eldense, Bunol, Recambios Colon, Roda, Torre Levante and Vilamarxant.

“We regret to announce the death of Jose Castillejo, who defended our shirt during the 18/19 season,” Roda wrote.

“Rest in peace, Jose. We will always remember you. We send our love to your family and friends.”

Edenze, another one of Castillejo’s former clubs, also offered their condolences online after the “terrible news”.

“Terrible news coming from the catastrophic DANA,” a statement from Eldense wrote.

“CD Eldense deeply regrets the death at the age of 28 of José Castillejo, former blue-and-red player in the 2015/2016 season. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.”

Valencia’s scheduled Copa Del Rey clash with sixth-tier Parla Escuela on Wednesday was postponed, while their visit of Real Madrid in La Liga at the weekend will also not take place due to the severe floods.
