Bayern Munich starlet Paul Wanner still undecided between Germany and Austria

September 14, 2024

The options are still left on the table

Paul Wanner, Bayern Munich’s loanee at Heidenheim, is making waves with his performances and has caught the attention of two international teams. Germany and Austria, both of which Wanner could commit to, are fighting for the 19-year-old midfielder’s allegiance. That said, the player is focused on playing time first; the choice of turning out for either country will eventually come.

“Of course, I won’t take a break [from international football] forever,” Wanner said (Suddeutsche Zeitung via @iMiaSanMia). “It’s not my goal not to be an international player. I want to get started at some point. Actually, I want to play in the Bundesliga for a whole year to see where it goes, but maybe the decision will be made sooner. I don’t have a final feeling for the right time yet. I can say quite clearly that my decision is still open. I haven’t decided anything yet.”

Wanner was quoted as saying that, “Choosing a national team is not like a club. You can’t switch there and then back again, and a loan move isn’t an option either”. He also rejected the chance to play for Germany U21s during the latest international break, simply because he was managing his fitness. “There was a simple reason for that. My body just needed a short break. The transition to the Bundesliga, two training camps, Conference League playoffs, five games in 16 days, that was exhausting. So I communicated that clearly to everyone.”
