Bayern Munich looking to sell a defender, but who?

June 6, 2024

Another year, another defensive transfer saga.

Another year, another centre-back related transfer saga on the cards.

Bayern Munich are reportedly in the race for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah and this alongside the impending return of Josip Stanišić who is inevitably going to play a big role in the team in the coming years, it seems Bayern’s centre-back spot has reached critical mass, and something has to give.

The Bayern board agree too, and are open to letting one centre-back go. Matthijs de Ligt is an extremely popular figure in the dressing room and a leading player, Eric Dier is being planned with for the upcoming season and Min-jae Kim has not even completed his settling in phase at Bayern. This leaves one Dayot Upamecano, who has as of yet failed to have a single season of consistent top-level performances, making him a candidate for sale according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports DE (as reported on X by @iMiaSanMia).

This all despite Upamecano seemingly being the best fit for Vincent Kompany’s style of play puzzles us all, but maybe a change of scenery is exactly what’s needed for both parties. What do you make of it? Let us know your thoughts in the discussion below.
