Relive PSG’s Star-Studded Run to 1995 Coupe de France Trophy

May 25, 2024

Paris Saint-Germain aim to win their 15th Coupe de France this Saturday against Olympique Lyonnais at the Stade Pierre Mauroy. One of the star-studded teams to win the domestic cup was the 1994-1995 squad, featuring players like David Ginola, Antoine Kombouaré, and Alain Roche. Here’s a look back at the team’s march to lifting the trophy.

The Parisians kicked off the competition in the Round of 64 with a 3-1 extra-time victory over Stade RennaisPaul Le Guen and George Weah scored, and an own goal by François Denis added to the tally.

In the Roundof 32, PSG encountered FC Martigues, and Valdo’s lone goal helped the capital club advance to the Round of 16. Bernard Lama became the star in the next round against Le Havre, as he registered a clean sheet and made two saves in the penalty kick shootout, which PSG won 4-3.

Ricardo Gomes would be the hero for PSG in the quarterfinals as his brace helped them defeat AS Nancy 2-0 and punch their ticket to the semifinals, where they’d face their eternal rival Olympique de Marseille

Against OM, PSG would win Le Classique 2-0 with goals from Gomes and Weah as the Parisians advanced past their rival for a spot in the Coupe de France final against RC Strasbourg Alsace.

In the tightly contested final, Brazilian standout Raí provided the assist on the goal scored by Le Guen for the eventual 1-0 win over Strasbourg that allowed PSG to lift the domestic cup for the fourth time. The Parisians would go on to win the Coupe de France ten more times after the 1995 final.

The 2023-24 squad will look to follow in their footsteps and end the three-year drought as PSG have not won the Coupe de France since 2021.
