Jamie Carragher now shares who’s been the best player in the Premier League

May 14, 2024

Jamie Carragher has revealed whether he thinks who out of Phil Foden or Cole Palmer has been the Premier League’s best player this season.

It is a testament to Manchester City’s academy that two of their graduates have been viewed as the standout performers in the best league in the world.

Foden and Palmer have 25 and 31 goal contributions in the Premier League respectively.

Carragher shares who has been better this season: Foden or Palmer
Manchester City’s number 47 could put his team in pole position to win the league title if they beat Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

Simultaneously, Cole Palmer deserves heaps of credit for shining the way he has in a Chelsea team that has struggled this campaign.

Both players have been exceptional in vastly different circumstances.

Jamie Carragher initially expressed how difficult it was for him to choose whether Phil Foden or Cole Palmer has been the best player in the league.

On Sky Sports, he said: “I spent all day thinking about this and there’s two players I was thinking about. Mine was [Phil] Foden and Cole Palmer.”

“The reason I never went for Cole Palmer, maybe it’s wrong to say this but just the fact that he was with Chelsea, they hadn’t had a great season and they hadn’t played in the Champions League and maybe against the elite competition but I could’ve tossed a coin on it.”

After explaining why he did not pick Cole Palmer, Jamie Carragher expressed how key this season has been for Phil Foden.

“I think Cole Palmer has been absolutely sensational this season but I think this season for Foden, we know he’s brilliant, I think it’s been a breakout season in some ways where it almost feels like he’s one of the main players in the team. If you remember, the Champions League final [against Inter Milan], he was on the bench.”

Carragher concluded, “The last game of last season, City win the treble, he’s involved but he wouldn’t have felt like what he felt this season where he just feels central to everything Man City are doing.”

Phil Foden has had a better season than Cole Palmer
In our view, Jamie Carragher made the right pick by opting for Phil Foden over Cole Palmer as the league’s best performer.

For starters, Foden is perhaps performing in more challenging circumstances than Palmer.

Chelsea, who are currently in seventh place could be viewed as a team who are slowly but surely making progress.

After all, they finished 11th last season and Cole Palmer has helped them climb up the table.

However, despite all of Phil Foden’s brilliance, questions will be asked of Manchester City if they fail to win the title; such is the difference in pressure between both players and clubs.

In addition, while Palmer’s 21 league goals read impressively, he has scored nine penalties.

Scoring spot-kicks is a difficult skill but the striker in question has a major advantage over goalkeepers in such situations.

Foden, on the other hand, has scored 17 league goals, out of which, two have been free-kicks and that too from midfield.

With Jamie Carragher also pointing out that Phil Foden has competed in the Champions League unlike Cole Palmer, he has the edge over his former City teammate as the league’s best player.
