Liverpool ‘eye shock bid for £100m-rated Newcastle star’ – and want to make Magpies player ‘one of Arne Slot’s first signings’ after he admitted admiration for Steven Gerrard
Liverpool are reportedly considering a shock £100million bid for a top Newcastle star.
The club are preparing for a post-Jurgen Klopp era and already thinking through their first signings for Arne Slot.
Meanwhile, the Magpies are expected to offload at least one key player this summer in order to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
The likes of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Sean Longstaff have all been included in the conversation.
Gordon, 23, joined Newcastle from Everton for £45million in January 2023 and has become one of their top performers after a sluggish start.
He has broken into Gareth Southgate’s England side ahead of Euro 2024 thanks to an impressive campaign with 11 goals and 11 assists.
News of his Liverpool link comes less than a month after he admitted that Steven Gerrard was his idol growing up on Gary Neville’s The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet.
Gordon was a Liverpool fan as a youngster but was released by the club aged 11 and joined Everton, where he became a first-teamer.
He made 78 appearances over six seasons for The Toffees and was a key player in his final 18 months there.
Newcastle want to hang on to their stars but chief executive Darren Eales warned earlier in the season that fans should expect a major departure.
Eddie Howe has already warned the club not to sell Isak or Guimaraes as it would set them back ‘a considerable difference’.
Alternatively, they might look at selling Longstaff, an academy graduate, for pure profit.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s hierarchy is undergoing radical change in preparation for the post-Jurgen Klopp era.
They have already agreed compensation for Feyenoord boss Arne Slot to become their new manager in a package that could reach £9.42m.
Former director of football Michael Edwards has returned as CEO of Football at FSG, while Bournemouth transfer guru Richard Hughes is the new sporting director.
Julian Ward is poised to make a shock return as technical director of owners Fenway Sports Group as the club continues their reshuffle – just 18 months after leaving the Anfield club as sporting director.
Ward is set to rejoin the club alongside Pedro Marques, who is being poached from Benfica and will be appointed as director of football development by the owners. Both hires are set to officially start on June 1.
