Barcelona defender’s entourage unhappy with renewal offer; club open to summer sale

April 23, 2024

The name of Ronald Araujo has been dominating the headlines around Barcelona over the past week, following his red card against PSG that cost the Blaugrana a spot in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

Despite the error, the Uruguayan international is seen as an important figure in the team and remains a key part of Xavi Hernandez’s plans.

However, with Barcelona needing to generate revenue from sales this summer, Araujo has emerged as a strong candidate to be sold in the summer, reports SPORT.

Renewal offer tabled, but entourage unhappy
As has already been reported, Barcelona have made a renewal offer for Araujo, keeping in mind that his contract expires in 2026 and that his salary needs to be updated to his current status in the squad.

But SPORT reports that the defender’s entourage is unhappy with the contract proposal tabled by Barça to retain the player’s services for the future.

As such, even though Araujo himself is happy and wants to stay with the Catalans, there is a belief that he could be convinced to move on this summer, especially with interest from Bayern Munich and other top clubs.

Barcelona not ruling out a sale
As mentioned earlier, Barcelona need to make at least one big sale to generate revenue and be able to go after their intended targets in the summer.

Even though the names of Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and even Robert Lewandowski have been considered, it is Araujo who could end up being sold.

It is not because of his error against PSG, but the fact that he could attract offers in excess of €80 million amid interest from Bayern Munich and some other teams.

Currently the third captain behind Sergi Roberto and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Araujo had been viewed as the future first captain of Barcelona. However, due to circumstances, there may very well be a premature ending to his time at the club.
