I’m concerned for Leeds United hero Stuart Dallas – but I want him back in the squad
Versatile Leeds United player Stuart Dallas has not played for his club or country since April 2022 due to injury
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has spoken of his concern for Stuart Dallas over the Leeds United player’s lengthy spell on the sidelines. Dallas, who will turn 33 next month, has not played since breaking his leg in April 2022.
It remains unclear when Dallas will return to action. His United contract is up in the summer.
Speaking about Dallas, O’Neill said: “I think there is always a concern. Stuart’s injury is well documented. He is almost two years out at this point so in the modern era that is a huge chunk of football to miss.
“There’s constant dialogue between Stuart and myself and the medical team. His decision will obviously come to a head.”
O’Neill admits he would welcome both Dallas, who can operate in defence or in midfield, and Corry Evans back into the international fold. Evans made his long-awaited return to action following a serious knee injury this week, scoring for Sunderland’s Under-21s in their Premier League 2 fixture against Newcastle United.
“Corry’s been over a year out but he came back and played 45 minutes for the Under-21s so that is a positive step for him,” said O’Neill.
“Both (Evans and Dallas) players are out of contract at the end of the season with their respective clubs. I think they know what will determine their involvement at international level will be the next phase of their career — your club career always dictates your international career.
