Laporta convinced Barcelona will win the league despite trailing by eight points: “Always agree with Xavi”
After taking over a rather broken side in the middle of the 2021/2022 season, Xavi took Barcelona to their first league title in four years in his first full campaign as the head coach of the team in 2022/23.
The Catalans not only won La Liga by ten points, but also broke several historic records in the progress. They kept a mammoth 26 clean sheets across 38 games as Marc-Andre ter Stegen was awarded the best player of the season later on.
However, things have been difficult this season around. Barcelona currently trail unlikely leaders Girona by eight points — having played a game less —, and have already conceded four more goals than the entirety of last season.
They are also seven points behind Real Madrid, who are currently second, who also have a game in hand over Girona.
Despite this rather poor first-half, managing to only obtain 44 out of a possible 60 points, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is confident that his club will eventually defend their title under Xavi.
“Xavi said it is difficult to win the league? I always agree with Xavi. I want to add that yes, the opponents will make it very difficult, but we will win the league. I am convinced Barcelona will go far and will be favorites to win the league eventually,” Laporta was quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
Currently, the Barcelona president is involved in a media battle against Real Madrid and co. after Los Blancos’ highly controversial win against Almeria that saw several decisions go in their favour when they were losing 0-2 at Santiago Bernabeu.
That said, the Catalans will now turn their attention towards the Copa del Rey quarter-finals clash against Athletic Club tonight before hosting Villarreal on the weekend.
