Real Madrid president talks Vinicius, Ancelotti, Mbappe, Laporta after historic Super Cup triumph vs Barcelona

Three goals separated Real Madrid and Barcelona at the full-time whistle on Sunday night in the Spanish Super Cup. Last year, it was the Catalan club that came out on top, but this time it was Los Blancos that held the dominant scoreline in their favour.

The men in white outclassed Barcelona across the field on the night, gunning down the title with relative ease. In reality, the scoreline is kind to their opponents who barely had any fight to show.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez spoke to the media after his team’s win over Barcelona in the final and spoke about a plethora of topics including VInicius Jr, the trophy and Kylian Mbappe.

It was a historic night for Perez as he became the president with the most number of titles won at Real Madrid. And he began by giving his two cents on the team’s performance in Saudi Arabia and the latest trophy added to the cabinet.

“It is a great satisfaction for all Madrid players. We have won a Super Cup against the two great rivals of the Spanish competition. In both games, we have played very well, better today than the other day.”

“Against Atlético it was a great game for other reasons and for the chance of losing. Today from the beginning to the end we have played very well and everyone has been able to see it,” he added on the two games.

Speaking about the team’s hectic schedule, the Real Madrid president remembered the team’s challenging midweek clash against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey and how the team shaped up ahead of the game.

“On Thursday there is a Cup match and everything continues. We play a lot of games. Vinicius deserved a game like that. He has scored three goals and he and all the fans are very happy.”

“Every year that begins, Real Madrid is excited about all the titles. This one for being the first is very important,” he added on the importance of Sunday’s win.

Perez then went on to highlight the beauty of playing the occasional match overseas so as to connect with fans across the globe.

“And I have already said that we come to a place like Arabia, where you just have to see the number of fans there are and that they have been very satisfied because we have played two great games.”

To play at Real Madrid is the most rewarding, yet most unforgiving experience a player can have. The margin for error is almost inexistent at the club, yet, it is that professionalism that drives the team to titles.

“This is a club in which each title is not forgotten, you always think about the next one. I have inherited a club that is the one that is accustomed to winning, sacrificing, transmitting values and to creating Real Madrid all over the world. I want to continue this,” the president said about the club’s philosophy after his 59th title as the president.

Looking back fondly at his team’s run in the Spanish Super Cup, Perez’s words suggested that the positives outweighed the negatives of travelling to a new country and playing a separate tournament midway through the packed calendar.

“There are many Real Madrid players in Arabia who have spent a very happy night. The normal thing is that things like this happen in two-game tournaments.”

“We scored a lot of goals, people have had fun and we convey to the fans here and around the world that we have a great team. Every year we are going to work hard to give that satisfaction to the hundreds of millions of fans in the world,” he added.

Speaking about Vinicius Jr, who was the team’s MVP on the night, the club president said,

“Vinicius almost always shines. Scoring three goals is not normal, but today he has played a great game. He will be able to deny the goal one day, but the effort he makes to give assists and score goals is phenomenal.”

“That’s why he’s one of the best players in the world. He is very young, he is happy and he is very good. Every year he is going to be better,” he added on the Brazilian.

Perez also went on to give his two cents on Carlo Ancelotti and his impact on the team, saying,

“He is a coach who does very well in the style of Madrid, both for his way of understanding soccer and for his exemplary behaviour in each game. Real Madrid and Ancelotti fit very well.”

On Joan Laporta, his relationship with the Barcelona manager and the Blaugrana institution as a whole, the Real Madrid president denied any form of friction involved.

“My relationship is very good with Laporta and we have a very good institutional relationship. I know the effort they are making. He is sad and I am very happy today. These are the laws of soccer.”

As the Spanish businessman neared the end of his interview, he was quizzed about the possibility of Kylian Mbappe joining the club and the progress on that front.

“It’s not the day to talk about this. Today is the day to congratulate the players we have and not the players who are on other teams. We have been able to verify that we have scored 9 goals in two games,” Perez said about the same.

Along the same lines, he also refused to comment on the refereeing although he did admit that he was not happy with the direction it was following.

“It’s not the day to talk about the referees either. I’m just worried about what’s happening in soccer. Today I’m just worried about the enthusiasm of players and fans around the world.”
