Danny Cowley reacts to David Moyes contract update
Danny Cowley is hopeful that David Moyes will sign a new two-and-a-half-year contract at West Ham despite no updates since December.
Hammers fans watched on as their team lifted the Europa Conference League trophy last season, with Jarrod Bowen slotting home a 90th-minute winner in a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina.
And with West Ham’s fine start to the Premier League this campaign, Moyes was offered a contract extension, as per The Guardian. But with no update about him signing it since December, his current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.
“I’m hoping he does [sign the contract] because he’s done an unbelievable job,” Cowley, a former footballer and lifelong West Ham fan
“Football managers get criticised and David Moyes… I’m 45 now and I was only two years old when West Ham won the FA Cup in 1980 but I don’t really remember that. So last year, the Conference League success was the first time I’ve seen West Ham win a trophy. He’s done a brilliant job.”
Moyes has done an incredible job at London Stadium, coming in for his second spell at the club after being shunned for the bigger name in Manuel Pellegrini.
After recent fixtures against Liverpool, in the EFL Cup, and Fulham, in the Premier League, reactionary-based opinions were shared about axing Moyes from his managerial post. However, most fans have seen the amazing job that the Scot has managed, deservedly being awarded a contract extension.
However, it is worrying that he has yet to put pen to paper, or at least announce it, anyway. Moyes may wait until the end of the season to sign the new contract, but that will have dire consequences for the players on the pitch or potential targets looking at a move to London.
Performances have not changed just because of the contract offer, though. They have bettered, even. West Ham sit in sixth place in the Premier League, five points behind high-flying Tottenham Hotspur, and are chasing another European title in the Europa League.
It would be devastating for the Hammers if Moyes does not sign the contract. But there is still a hopeful feeling for most, like Cowley that the Scot will put pen to paper soon enough.
