Ottmar Hitzfeld wants Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos back with Germany

January 2, 2024

While there has been some vocal sentiment for Julian Nagelsmann not to bring Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos back to the German national team, there are a few other voices urging the former Bayern Munich boss to recall Kroos — including Ottmar Hitzfeld.

“Toni Kroos is a very experienced player who is very successful with Real Madrid. Germany has many good midfielders. But I think Toni Kroos would be good for the team with his experience, his cleverness and his simplicity” Hitzfeld told Deutschen Presse-Agentur.

One of the reasons that Kroos stepped away from Germany was that he wants to keep himself fresh and healthy for his club career. Now, though, Kroos is supposed to be slowing down at Real Madrid.

Well…about that. Since November 11th, Kroos has started all but one game for Los Blancos. Will the somewhat recent uptick in playing time make the German reluctant to commit to the national team?

Hitzfield is at least one person who hopes not.
