Michael Owen slams Bruno Fernandes amid Manchester United discipline issues

December 10, 2023

Man Utd will be without club captain Bruno Fernandes when they face Liverpool in the Premier League next weekend.

Michael Owen has slammed Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and even joked that he got suspended on purpose to avoid having to face Liverpool next weekend.

The Portuguese midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth yesterday and as a result, he will be suspended for United’s upcoming trip to Anfield.

Fernandes was unable to inspire his team as they were humiliated on Saturday afternoon, with Bournemouth sealing an historic away win thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke, Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi.

United will need someone else to step up and lead them when they travel to face Liverpool next weekend and former forward Owen had little sympathy for Fernandes after his suspension.

“I wonder how many yellow cards he’s had for dissent and waving his arms about,” Owen told Premier League Productions. “Possibly you don’t fancy going to Anfield. I wouldn’t at the moment. I’m not sure you’re thinking of the next game when you’re in the thick of playing.

“He should be responsible; he should be a good ambassador and a leader for the team. We all know referees are clamping down on that and he gets booked an awful lot for a player who hardly puts his foot in and tackles. Really, he gets booked an awful lot.”
