Real Madrid agree contract extensions with key midfield duo

October 12, 2023

Real Madrid have reached an agreement with both Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde over new contracts, sources have confirmed to 90min.

The 14-time Champions League winners are also close to announcing a new deal for star winger Vinicius Junior – reward for his scintillating form over the past couple of seasons – and it’s likely that his extension will be confirmed before Madrid’s home game with Sevilla on 21 October.

Led by the evergreen Carlo Ancelotti, Madrid have enjoyed a fine start to the post-Karim Benzema era, winning eight of their nine La Liga games thanks to the genius of summer signing Jude Bellingham. They have also picked up wins in their first two Champions League group games, with the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder again the star attraction against Union Berlin and Napoli.

But the 20-year-old, who already has ten goals to his name in all competitions, has been ably supported by a hugely talented midfield that includes Camavinga and Valverde who, alongside Aurelien Tchouameni, have been positioned by the club to take over from veterans Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

90min understands that Madrid’s hierarchy have been working hard in the background over new contracts for Camavinga and Valverde – the latter of whom expressed a desire to stay despite widespread interest from the Premier League – and an agreement has now been reached for the duo to prolong their stays.

Both players were already contracted to the club until 2027, but they have agreed to extend by another season – joining Vinicius in committing to a long-term project at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Camavinga, who was of interest to Arsenal and Chelsea in the January transfer window, has flourished not only in central midfield but also at left-back, providing Madrid with another quality option amid Ferland Mendy’s ongoing battle to keep fit.

The 20-year-old’s form has also seen him become a regular fixture in Didier Deschamps’ France side, joining the ever-improving Tchouameni, who is a staple member of Les Bleus’ midfield.

Valverde, meanwhile, has proven time and again that he’s capable of playing in any role asked of him by Ancelotti – the Uruguayan has been utilised as a right winger at times when Madrid’s side has been overloaded with central midfield options.
